Harrisburg-1961. Here is an original photo that I took at the Passenger Station in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on 23 August 1961. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4917, a GG-1 (2-C-C-2) electric built in Juniata during June of 1942 and rated at 4,620 horsepower. It's pulling a Pittsburgh-bound passenger train into the Station. ("Red Shift" slide converted to Black & White.) |

Here is page five of a seven-page article by Karl Zimmermann entitled "Pennsy's GG1s." It was published originally in the July-August 1987 issue of "Locomotive & Railway Preservation" magazine, page 36. Partial Photo Caption: "May 7, 1976, in the cramped cab of GG1 No. 4934, westbound on the point of Amtrak's No. 41, the 'Broadway Limited' from New York. Road Foreman E.W. Connor is running as we curve through the junction at Philadelphia's Zoo Tower." Photo by Karl Zimmermann. Amtrak's engine #4934 is a GG-1 (2-C-C-2) electric built in Juniata by the Pennsylvania Railroad as number "4917" during June of 1942, rated at 4,620 horsepower, inherited by the Penn Central and Conrail, acquired by Amtrak and renumbered "4934", and presently exposed to the elements and rusting away on some siding near Oneonta, New York. |
